The Art & History Museums – Maitland (A&H) is pleased to announce that it has received a $213,740 grant from Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs for Cultural Facilities Funding. These funds, in addition to a portion of restricted facilities funds gifted to the A&H by The Morgan Group, will be used to renovate its Germaine Marvel Building, located at 210 W. Packwood Avenue, Maitland, Florida. The grant period runs from June 1, 2013 to September 2014. Construction on the remodel and expansion project is currently projected to begin in September 2013 and be completed in March 2014.

The remodel of the Germaine Marvel Building, which was last updated in 1988, will include a new gallery space for the permanent exhibition of André Smith works, a new sculpture garden, a 600sq.ft. expansion, complete interior remodel, and wrap-around porch leading into a surrounding garden area. The historic portion at the front of the building will remain intact. This renovation and expansion is in line with multiple goals from the A&H’s 2011 Strategic Plan, including expanding and upgrading programming, growing its facilities to meet audience needs, and diversifying revenue through earned income opportunities.

“The Germaine Marvel Building remodel will enhance our treasured campus with a total of over 3600 square feet of usable, flexible space, allowing us to meet the needs of our growing number of participants,” says Andrea Bailey Cox, A&H Executive Director/CEO. “This additional space is critical to our mission to foster appreciation in art, historical research, and preservation. The improved venue will be a valuable cultural resource, providing an ideal location for increased educational programming, exhibitions, lectures, performances, special events, and community programs. Additionally, the renovation will enhance opportunities for community partnerships, which will bring further multidisciplinary programming to the A&H campus. We are thankful to the Orange County Cultural Affairs Council and the Orange County Board of Commissioners for providing the A&H with funding to help make these improvements.”

Milestones of the Germaine Marvel Building renovation will include:

Restoring the historic portion of the building with indoor updates. No renovations will compromise the historic quality of the building.
Removing the western-facing wall to make room for a 29 x 20 feet addition. The proposed addition has a similar architectural vocabulary to the Maitland Art Center with two walls of glass doors and two patios welcoming participants into the surrounding gardens. This design is true to founder André Smith’s legacy, while at the same time, separates itself visually from the surrounding architecture so visitors can discern between the historic buildings and the addition.
Adding gallery lighting, a professional hanging system, and modular, temporary museum walls for added flexibility of the space to serve a wide variety of participants.
Renovating the kitchen to add cabinets, equipment and meet catering standards, including space for storage.
Upgrading the restrooms to meet current ADA standards, and enclose the current outdoor hallway to better protect against weather, provide expanded space for rooms, and provide better security for guests.
Re-landscape the exterior of the building, including an irrigation system and incorporating a sculpture garden.
Leading this renovation project is Andrea Bailey Cox; Charles “Butch” Charlan, Charlan-Brock & Associates, Architects & Planners; Chris Raleigh, Raleigh Design, Inc.; and Joan Randolph, RLA and Bill Randolph, CPSM, JCR Consulting. Additional members of the project renovation team are Gus Bobes, Bobes Associates Consulting Engineers, Inc.; Victor Diaz, Real Estate Attorney at Starfield and Smith; Jason Albu of Albu & Associates, Inc; and Valerie Seidel, The Balmoral Group. This team will work closely with the City of Maitland throughout the duration of the project.

The A&H staff will work closely with all cultural groups and individuals who plan on using the Germaine Marvel Building during the construction to ensure all space needs are met and community members receive a high level of service throughout this project.
